most of them just show up as serial usb (ttyUSB0/etc) and then you get a special chat script to dial up with it. Some (like my novatel usb727) first show up as a cdrom drive, which I inject, then the serial devices pop up.
The one non linux compatible thing was registering the device, which I had to do on my mac. haven't needed a windows or mac thingie since.
... assuming you're talking about cellular wireless devices :P
Folks, "3G dongle" pretty universally refers to a wireless device. They're not that hard to make work under Linux, I've heard, they're generally serial devices.
Same general idea, but I wanted to add that "dongle" always sounded like a dirty word to me and made me giggle a little. Also, I'm surviving off of twizzlers and diet dew as of late so a LOT of things make me giggle these days. Yay finals.
