It surprised me too. A nontrivial amount of that is tables of contents, lists of figures, bibliography, and other boilerplate, but it turns out that it does take an awful lot of text to describe how a particular compiler works in detail.

Daphne says that the official position is that you don't get your grade until the thesis is handed in. That hasn't stopped some committees by telling people their grades, of course, but mine is not that merciful.
