Oddly enough, facing to the side is required on provisional licenses. I guess it's so the cop doesn't have to read the text when he pulls you over.

It's a surprisingly good photo, especially for a driver's license.

It's what comes after a learner's permit, but before a full license. You can drive unsupervised, but you can't drive after midnight, or have more than one passenger who doesn't live in your house. Stupid graduated license system.

they have something akin to that in Arizona...

If you're under 21 (the big BOOOZE age) the license is vertical.

And after that, you turn 21, get a real horizonal one... and that's it.

One interesting thing of note... the license doesn't expire until you turn 65... so I have another 43 years with this license...

YEY ON YOUR LICENSE!!!. took me 3 tries :) That provisional license sucks, in NY you automatically get a real one when you turn 18 (or take driver's ed).
