I'll continue a string of math-related posts (viz. [livejournal.com profile] neuromantic and [livejournal.com profile] borokoro) among my friends and talk about my latest discovery.

I was reading a FoxTrot collection as a prelude to sleep, and I came to the strip where Paige dreams that she's faced with a complicated math exam.

One of the problems was a triple integral in spherical coordinates.

I checked it; Bill Amend did the change-of-variables from cartesian to spherical coordinates correctly; the fudge factor (Jacobian of the transform) was correct.

I'm not sure what's worse: a) that it was correct; b) that I bothered to check it; or c) I'm up at 5:15 AM telling people on IRC and posting to LJ about both of the above.

I should try to sleep soon, have to go have people stick needles into me and suck blood out for nefarious laboratory purposes in about five hours.

Sheeesh. Phlebotomists .. leeches, the lot of 'em.

Actually I can relate ... I have always checked up on math and stuff in stories (well, barring Ringworld and the one about the neutron star, as I so totally didn't have to background ...).

Now, posting it to LJ might be obsessive LOL ;)

not surprising

he was some sort of science major in college. math or physics, IIRC. anyway, the worst part of it is that it was correct; he should've just put in psuedomath so that losers like us wouldn't be tempted to check it.
