If I had a digital camera, I'd take a picture of the neat little widget we got in vector calc today - it's this paper thing representing R3 and a point therein, with formulae for converting to and from cylindrical and spherical coordinates. Here's a really terrible image of it - the triangle thing in the middle is a point, the perpendicular folds of the paper are the X, Y, and Z axes, and the formulae for going to and from cylindrical and spherical coordinates are on the two side panels, respectively. There're some formulae and labels on the x-y plane that don't show up in that too...whee.

Didn't do as well on the vector exam as I expected, and Latin's kind of been kicking my ass all week as well. Not an especially great academic week, though Jake and I did murder both the logic homework and the bullshit map quiz in cold blood.

I got to play with Maple's programming features for vector last night, too...it's actually a pretty cool environment, with only slightly weird syntax. It has first-class procedures (Maple people: is there any difference between a Maple function and a procedure, or is the ()-> notation syntactic sugar for proc(), as I suspect?) and an interactive debugger which has the advantage, a la LispM, of being able to display the component expressions of both procedures you create and procedures in the library. Very cool.

Also did miscellaneous dicking around with Scheme on paper, and wrote all but the formatter for the SL truth-table generator I was kicking around a few weeks ago. The only tricky parts were generating row stubs (which I fixed after realizing I was approaching the problem from the completely wrong angle) and infix<->prefix conversion, which was good for me to get practice in anyway. I'll probably be writing a full SL parser and derivation validity analyzer in Java for Jake's proof formatter, which will both refresh my languishing Java skills (not that I especially care about Java) and give me practice in parsing, syntactic analysis, and syntactic transforms (maybe, especially if I extend it to do SD+ too). And it'll be fun. I don't get to program as much as I'd like to, largely due to lack of ideas, and these days, even more colossally due to sheer lack of time.

...doesn't stop me from playing Deus Ex for hours, though. Maybe I'm just too tired to be creative. I digress.

argo (magus's replacement - may it not rest in peace until argo fully works) is arriving at Dell's repair facility sometime today; hopefully they'll return it in a usable condition. Of course, parallel to this, magus is becoming increasingly more flaky. vita est, I suppose, but not having a reliable laptop is mildly annoying.

Did I mention that I'm tired? I am, and lately I've been having trouble sleeping late even on weekends. My eyes just pop open at around 0900; usually, I can coax myself back into sleep, but I'm still tired when I wake up. Memo to internal clock: I DO NOT HAVE MORNING CLASSES ON SATURDAY OR SUNDAY.

It doesn't help either that I'm losing sleep due to worry over transfer applications. Although people keep telling me I'll get into somewhere for certain, I keep fearing that I won't. It's the uncertainty that's the killer...I just can't stand not knowing. I'll rest much more easily in April or May when the results are in. The idea of another two years here is simply appalling...I'd go insane from boredom. Really.

I reread Dance, Dance, Dance a few days ago; it still freaks me out...Murakami is just such an amazing writer.

This is the most I've written in some time. I think I'm going to take a shower now and then either nap or play Deus Ex until my heart stopsI get hungry or bored.

(BTW: Music is from Patrick Doyle's score for Kenneth Brannaugh(sp?)'s Henry V. Simply incredible film...if you haven't seen it, you're doing yourself a real disservice.)

I think you just broke a length-record.
