Well, in English (as in Latin), the phrase "ad hoc" can take a few different meanings depending upon context. In English it is usually meant to "make an amendment to this thing" or "make and addition to this thing", and the implication is usually that these adjustments are made to conceal or rectify some error in the original thing, most often in a hasty or hackish manner.
