You should try several others that are fun. Starcraft is the classic, age of empires is fun on the LAN, I've been playing Star Trek Armada 2 recently which is fun...

I don't like playing against friends, but i like playing WITH friends. oh and warcraft 3 is floating around, you should check it out while it's 'floating'. `8r)

And Emperor: Battle for Dune kicks some serious ass too.

Starcraft might be worth playing, it has a nice story to go along with it and has some interesting variations on gameplay (like the indoor levels).

It is technically inferior to Total Annihilation in just about every way, though.
