They didn't have one, so they pulled out a blank, stuck it into a key punch, and made one.
What had me wowing for a bit afterwards was how the key punch worked. Each notch on the key corresponded to a number.
That key was a bearer of information.
Yes, it's stunningly obvious, but it was terribly neat at the time, really. :)
