Okay. So...NYC was fun.
Met [livejournal.com profile] pvx and [livejournal.com profile] topher at Penn just fine after some semi-frantic cellphone calls. We took the 2 train to the theater area, ate at some diner with a waiter who acted very parental (pushing homemade coleslaw, which was actually rather good at us, for example), and then went to the show
The show was awesome.
Petrucci's set was first...almost all new stuff. Good new stuff. The only song that WASN'T new stuff was the last song of his set, which to everyone's utter surprise and delight was Paradigm Shift, off Liquid Tension Experiments, which sounds about fifty times better live!
Vai's set was next...'twas cool, but I didn't know any of it. He played the guitar with his teeth for the last song, though, and taht was amusing. His drummer also did a truly awe-inspiring solo about halfway in.
Satriani's was...awesome. Really. That guy is incredible. I only recognized one of the songs he played (Satch Boogie), but the set was still awesome beyond words.
The final set was all three of them jamming onstage at the same time, which owned totally. Wow is the only way I can describe it. Really.
So, after that, we all went our various ways on the subway (Toph back to GCS, pvx and I back to his father's apt (which is, alas, absolutely crammed with kipple)). Bed was a futon that had to be taken off its frame due to the frame tending to tip up on me.
Today, after pvx got back from his 3DSMAX class, we had "breakfast" at a neato Chinese noodle place (mmm greasy salty chickeny lo mein) in Midtown. We then proceeded to Grand Central (which, btw, is infinitely nicer than Penn is) to pick up [livejournal.com profile] jzig, which was accomplished easily. We went out, screamed at the horrible neon around Times Square (the most touristy, and one of the least desirable parts of the city, imho), and found a theater playing FF.
FF...kicked ass. I don't know what the people who called the graphics subpar were smoking, I really couldn't tell it wasn't animated in a lot of the scenes. The plot felt almost exactly like a video game, but that isn't bad. The only part of it that I thought could have been improved was the music - it felt far too generic-film-scorey.
So, after FF, we raved about it on our way back to the West Village, where we ate lunch at the r0x0rish ramen place again. (For anyone in the NYC area, it's called Tokyo La Men, and it's on University Place and 12th St.) Then we went back to Penn, found I had missed my train, and settled in to waiy. Austin's train hasn't even left at the time of writing this, heh...he's not getting home until 0300. Poor guy. He and jzig went off to buy the first DVD of Lain, I think.
So, kickass weekend, no?
I'm going to take a shower now.
