Okay, here's the real scoop. It seems that iris's eth0 (the interface soldered to the mobo!) has crapped out.
Hence, I'm going to CompUSA to get a router to replace it. iris will remain as a web server, mail server, etcetera due to forwarded ports. I estimate that I'll be back and operating in a few hours. Sorry - really sorry - for the inconvenience
